Traditionally wetsuits have been made using neoprene. Neoprene is DuPont’s trade name for polychloroprene.
Polychloroprene is a family of synthetic rubbers. It has many uses as in general it has good chemical stability, and maintains flexibility over a wide temperature range.
Wetsuits use a special kind of foamed neoprene that adds to their insulating properties.
Eco Friendly Neoprene
To some people the important word above is ‘synthetic’. They would prefer the suit to be made of natural materials. If this is you, then read on, as a number of manufacturers are getting the message and creating more natural based neoprene.
Eco Friendly Manufacturers
Swish suits are made from limestone based neoprene. In their own words: “All Swish Wetsuits are made from Bioprene, a revolutionary higher-performing neoprene that is derived from limestone instead of petrol.”
In their words: ”Patagonia wetsuits are made from combination of limestone neoprene, polyester and nylon, with high recycled content.”
In their words: ”Henderson Wetsuits utilize limestone-based polychloroprene for most of its neoprene products. Doing this reduces our dependence on oil and oil-derived chemicals. In their words We enjoy diving in a blue ocean and doing what we can to keep it that way for a long time.”
These manufactures all make high quality wetsuits so you can keep warm whilst looking after the eco system in which you are playing!
